Our Story
The Movement for Democratic Change - Zimbabwe (MDC) was formed in 1999 by a coalition of trade unionists, non-governmental organizations, student and other societal bodies. Its iconic first president was Dr. Morgan Richard Tsvangirai who passed on in February 2018. Since the passing of MT, there have been unconstitutional skirmishes by self-serving individuals driven by self-ego to subvert the party's constitution and impose themselves as leaders of the party. The MDC is a people's project and all power rests with the people. The people have spoken and are now reclaiming their party through the MDC Restoration, an agenda that is bold, precise, and strategic. Come join us on this journey to finally restore the MDC legacy and finish the job started by our founders, to free Zimbabwe from the failed Zanu-pf regime.
MDC RESTORATION CORE MISSION
1. RESTORE adherence to the MDC's constitution
The MDC constitution is the party's sacrosanct document that governs all the activities, policies, and processes of the party. The constitution should be adhered to at all times in all decision-making.
2. RESTORE the MDC's founding principles of democracy, constitutionalism, and servant leadership
All activities of the party should be conducted in a democratic, transparent, and accountable manner. Decisions should be deliberated and collectively agreed upon within the different organs of the party. All leaders to act, behave and practice servant leadership at all times while representing the party.
3. RESTORE the branch structure in membership mobilisation
The branch should remain the starting point for all members of the party. The party will embark on a constituency based mobilisation effort that will leave no voting constituency behind.
4. RESTORE holding of structure congresses from Ward to National level
Leadership will come from the people starting with Ward leaders, cascading to Districts, Provinces, and eventually National.
5. RESTORE nomination of National Standing Committee (NSC) candidates by Provinces
As has been the norm with MDC's past 4 National Congresses, all candidates to the NSC including the presidium to be nominated by provincial structures.
6. RESTORE the belief of the Zimbabwean citizenry that change will come in their lifetime
MDC was formed to bring democratic change to our beloved Zimbabwe. The MDC Restoration agenda seeks to complete the struggle to emancipate our people from a draconian system of rule espoused by the ruling zanu pf party.
